Local Area Information - Kirkland

Located on the eastern shore of Lake Washington, Kirkland provides excellent access to Seattle. Nearby Interstate 405, which runs south past Boeing in Renton, also meets up with Highway 520, which leads directly across Lake Washington to Seattle past the University of Washington.

In 1888, Kirkland became the first city on what is now known as the Eastside, or eastern Lake Washington, and was incorporated in 1905. Now a city of over 40,000, it is the fifth largest city in King County and the twelfth largest in the state. Many young, bedroom-community types live here, and commute to either Seattle or Eastside corporations and high-tech companies, such as Microsoft in Redmond.

Kirkland features more waterfront than any other city in the state, having preserved over 25% of its over 4 miles of waterfront for public use. It also features private and public boat moorage on Moss Bay. It has some fine restaurants, and along the downtown waterfront you will find many art galleries and shops, as well as Kirkland's new 400-seat community theater for the performing arts.
